About Hospital Grade Breast Pumps

The term “hospital grade breast pump” is often used as a marketing term. In most cases, a personal-use breast pump works well for most parents. Some higher-risk patients might qualify for a multi-user, heavy-duty hospital grade pump if they meet certain medical needs. Even if a hospital-grade pump is approved, it's still helpful for the parent to have a good personal-use pump too.

Some reasons a hospital-grade pump might be considered:

  1. The baby is in the hospital (like in the NICU).
  2. The baby has a medical condition (like breathing or heart problems, or something like a cleft palate) that makes breastfeeding hard.
  3. The parent has tried using other pumps (manual or electric) but isn’t making enough milk

Because these situations can be complex, a lactation consultant in the hospital will review each case and talk through what’s possible.
